Friday, September 22, 2017

Greetings everyone,

The Board of Directors invites you and any prospective members you can bring with you, to the

2017-18 season’s first event, our Open House on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Please set aside this date. It is the kick-off of another great season!  League organizers will be present to meet, greet, and sign up new and returning members. Goldline Curling Supplies may be on hand to display some of their equipment (to be confirmed), and catalogues will be available for those wishing to order curling equipment through the Tuck Shop. There will also be squash equipment catalogues available. The bar will be open and munchies will be served.

The ice should be ready for league play in mid-October.  A second Open House, “Come Out and Play”, on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. is an opportunity to play squash and/or curl for all who are interested.  Watch for details of other scheduled events on the Club notice board and on the web site.

Ann McGahey is back in the Office again this year.   Brian Hewson remains our ice technician.

Browse the Club’s website at for all the Club news and downloadable membership forms.

This year’s membership form is attached. Please fully complete it and return it to the office.  Membership fees have not increased from 2016 17. You will have the option of providing five post-dated cheques (15th of the month October to February) – all to be submitted at the time of registration – and still qualify for the early payment discount. To encourage new members, we are offering a month of free curling and/or squash to first timers and a discounted first and second year fee.  A reduced rate for 20 to 30 year old members is also offered. New honourary members will pay a partial fee.

Volunteers are an important part of Club operations.  Please consider where you can help with the many jobs which keep the Club operating and vibrant.  Opportunities include assisting with bonspiels, squash tournament, fundraising, bartending, kitchen meal preparation and serving, the Youth Program on Mondays, etc.

Swing & Sweep a Success

Friday, November 27th, 2015

Fifty-one curlers curled and we had an amazing twenty-three golfers golfing in the SNOW at the second annual Swing & Sweep!! Now, that is the definition of a diehard golfer. Well done! We had another five hungry people join us for our lasagna dinner, made by Anita Kerfoot. Caesar salad was prepared by Debbie Lewis, with apple crisp following for dessert baked by Jean McGrath. Ireland’s Apples not only donated all the apples for the apple crisp, but also the eight bags of apples that were used as table centrepieces and prizes for each table! Many thanks! Heaps of thanks go to our bartender for the day, Richard Burroughs! As always, we had great ice, thanks to Brian Hewson!

The Smiths Falls Golf & Country Club went above and beyond the call of duty in hosting the golf portion of the day despite the wintry weather! Golf in the snow; we did not plan that a year ago, but kudos to those who played. One threesome, when on the first tee, could hear Guinness calling to them from inside the warm clubhouse and proceeded to investigate, after returning their clubs to their cars.

Keeping with “FUN” being the most important part of our fundraiser, the winning team was decided by a random draw at the end of the day. The winners of the $80.00 prize were Rick McGrath, Jean McGrath, Jean Thompson and Barry Thompson! The 50/50 prize winner of the $103.50 was Robin Milk!

Even while having a great time, we managed to achieve great success in the actual fundraising portion of the day. We raised $1654.15 to present to the club, and the bar brought in $629.30, before taxes and product (roughly $315.00). The combined total of the two for our club is $1969.15!

Thank you to all of our participants and helpers! Have a great curling and squash season!
